TransCanada Treasure chest reveals $1.7 million gift to Calgary's United Way campaign

A treasure chest was cracked open today to reveal funds raised in the amount of $1,699,145 to mark TransCanada’s largest ever donation to Calgary’s United Way campaign. TransCanada’s President, Pipelines, Russ Girling presented the cheque to Ruth Ramsden-Wood, President of Calgary and Area United Way with a group of TransCanada employees looking on.

“It’s really impressive to see the number of employees, contractors and retirees involved in this year’s campaign. We know that donations and volunteer hours will make a difference in our community,” said Mr. Girling.

“Because of the efforts of TransCanada employees, more Calgarians will go to work or school with a full stomach, will be safe from domestic violence, will access affordable housing, and will be in a position to participate meaningfully in our community,” says Ms. Ramsden-Wood. “It’s the thanks of Calgary’s most vulnerable people that I pass along to TransCanada today.”

As well, special guest Wayne Turnbull from the Canadian National Institute for the Blind was in attendance to share how United Way makes a difference in his life and in the lives of many.

TransCanada’s fall United Way campaign week engaged personnel and retirees in fundraising, awareness and community events. In addition to surpassing the campaign goal of $1.3 million dollars, TransCanada also exceeded its goal of 155 “Leaders of the Way”, with 201 employees and retirees each giving $1000 or more to the United Way of Calgary and Area.

TransCanada’s United Way campaign theme this year was ‘You are the Key’ --you are truly ‘the key’ to making a difference in your community.

TransCanada and its employees are among Western Canada’s largest contributors to United Way. Since 2000, TransCanada has donated approximately $10.2 million to the United Way of Calgary and Area. The company shows strong support for United Way by matching 100 per cent of all donations from employees, contractors and retirees. During the 2006 campaign, employee canvassers personally visited and discussed United Way donation opportunities with the company’s Calgary and area employees and contractors.
