TransCanada's Global Fest fireworks tickets sales go to United Way

Largest gift ever received by United Way from a community event

CALGARY, Alberta - September 22, 2003 - The fireworks that brightened Calgary's sky in August have also helped brighten the city's United Way campaign. TransCanada's Global Fest has donated funds from ticket sales from last month's international fireworks competition to United Way.

The $150,000 gift is the largest donation ever generated for United Way of Calgary and Area by a community event. TransCanada Corporation and Global Fest presented the gift to United Way during the noon-hour kickoff to TransCanada's annual employee United Way campaign.

"As a strong supporter of United Way TransCanada is proud to be involved with such a community-minded event," says Hal Kvisle, TransCanada's chief executive officer. "Global Fest 2003 was an excellent event and we're pleased that it will benefit United Way as well."

TransCanada is a strong supporter of United Way. Over the past five years, the Calgary-based company and its employees have raised more than $6 million for United Way of Calgary and Area.

"United Way is honoured to be the recipient of this generous gift from TransCanada's Global Fest 2003," says Ruth Ramsden-Wood, President of United Way of Calgary and Area. "This spectacular fireworks event was the spark that helped to ignite the 2003 United Way Campaign."

TransCanada's Global Fest featured the city's first international fireworks competition and a cultural festival with 10 pavilions showcasing international music, traditions, customs and foods. Ticket sales from the One World Festival went to the community groups hosting the pavilions.

"TransCanada's vision and early commitment to Global Fest sets an example for the corporate sector, and provides sponsor-driven, not-for-profit events such as TransCanada's Global Fest with a unique opportunity to pass on gate revenues for the benefit of social and cultural agencies working in our community," says Lindsay Dann, Executive Director, TransCanada's Global Fest.
